I walked past this pub in Ti Linn, Donegal on a bad weather day from walking the cliffs of Slieve League – not a soul in sight. The next afternoon was a Sunday, the sun was out and the pub was packed – grass roots traditional Irish music wafted through the rooms – the locals were singing.
In most places singers/musicians play to entertain you – yet I’ve found in the small town pubs throughout Ireland – the locals gather to play music for a different reason and you get to witness it – it’s a privilege. Little if any expressions show on their faces – the music comes from a soulfulness of generations within – something that can not be taught. You can hear a pin drop when a local begins to sing – that is RESPECT!
Money can’t buy an experience like this!
Over the coming weeks – I visited this pub each Sunday afternoon to experience these sessions – you never knew what was going to be played or who was going to be playing. Such a treat!
