So we have been on a wild and windy ride through Macquarie Harbour and Hells Gates, then a calm and mysteriously misty cruise up the Gordon River. Now we get the chance to walk through the World Heritage rainforest.
We pull up at a ‘landing’ for the next stage of this Gordon River amazing cruise.
It feels quite ‘magical’ and ‘spiritual’ walking through the dampness and semi darkness – where nature is allowed to do ‘her’ thing. Her profound silence commands you to be silent or let out a quiet whisper. There are no words to describe the scenes.
Now protected, this Huon Pine tree fell from its own device about 19 years ago. Left where it fell, it now belongs to the rainforest, giving nutrients and ‘homes’ to other plants of the forest.
This is a very young and small Huon Pine tree – aged just 500 years. This tree began growing before white man stepped foot on Tasmania.
They are very slow growing and core samples of the giants have revealed their age to be over 3,000 years!
